On Your Marks

Graduation is approaching and the Degree show seems like so long ago!

On Your Marks had a brilliant opening night with plenty of interest! The place was packed within the first hour and the reaction to the show was great! It was a proud night for all of us D&ADers, seeing peoples reactions too our work was quite surreal, looking at their facial expressions towards the work and hearing peoples comments were on a whole encouraging! Our show was a great success which I will not forget!

I had two A2 prints which were printed elsewhere and mounted onto foam board and three books in the publication room on a nice stand accompanied by gloves, it was nice to see my work properly on display rather than pinned to a wall above my workspace!!

The night gave us a chance to celebrate our challenging three years! We had nothing to do but mingle, drink and look at what we had all achieved. Catching up with tutors and seeing faces from the year above and also industry was a good feeling. I can't wait to see what next years degree show beholds, I wonder if it will be as much of a success as ours was!

Reichstag

The Reichstag is Germany’s famous parliament building. Its architectural Design by Norman Foster, who also designed “The Gherkin” in London, is fantastic conceptually and visually. The public are able to visit the building and go up into the dome, from the dome you can see down onto the parliament floor. This is so that when parliament are discussing they can look up into the dome and see who they are making decisions for - the general public.
Inside the dome there are hundreds of mirrors, reflecting onto other people and also to the outside view of Berlin. We visited the Reichstag at night, the outside view was fantastic. I loved taking photographs and just thought it was beautifully designed, I took so many photographs in this building of the structure and of the reflections and patterns which the mirrors created. I also loved the idea of being able to see into the parliament room. I saw the similarity between Graphics and Architecture, I used to think that as long as a building worked it was fine. But this made me see that having a solid idea is just as important as it is to a Graphic Designer.

Helvetica Landscape- 3D- Experiments

Some experiments on the light box- the wooden letters blocked the light, the perspex letters reflected it. I got some lovely images!

Helvetica Landscape- 3D

Building a Typographic land... Laser cut Helvetica letters from ply wood and clear perspex. Each letter gradually gets smaller as the landscape builds up. My original thoughts came from the Chaos Typeface I made - One minor difference which adds up to create a significant one. These letters shrink by just one millimeter- a tiny change but as it progresses the shape changes dramatically.

Around the outside are the off cuts from the laser cutting process, I thought these were great and didn't want to throw them away! Placing them around the edge forms a 'floor' to surround the landscape... Thinking about promoting this as a life sized typographic land for people to visit! I was also thinking about what the land could be called... the letters could spell it out? From the side it would look like an odd town - from above you would be able to see the letters and the title of the place.

Royal Wedding

So because I have missed all of the bank holidays through working on my projects I thought Id take this morning off to watch the Royal Wedding. I went along to London earlier in the week and all of the decorations had been put up already, these are a few of the photographs I took - Proud to be British. Wish I could be there!

Expressive Paint

Photographing the 'scrap' paper from screen print- highlighting the fact that sometimes we throw away the best parts of our design! The dirty cloth full of paint has lots of potential! I have edited these images in photoshop to bring out the saturation, photographing the paper over a spotlight gave the images a focus point... unsure of where to go with these...

Paper Making

Whilst developing ideas for my print process project, I thought it was essential for me to also look into paper and the way it's made! The way you print is just as important as what you print onto!

My paper didn't turn out as well as I was expecting, but I had fun engaging in the process and being away from the computer screen! My photographs during making the paper express the fun I had! I would encourage anyone to make their own paper... not for the outcome but for the experience!

These are the simple instructions I followed: http://www.laceimports.com/michelle/projects/paper_instr.html
